As an alternative to Chinatown in Vancouver, the enclosed layout of Aberdeen Centre was a totally new concept in early 1990s. The mall was designed as an one-stop shopping with Asian themed retail stores, herbal tea shops, restaurants, cinema and bowling alley as well as continuous weekend entertainment. It was built to cater the blossoming Asian society with rapid growth in skillful and rich Asian immigrants under the government policy since 1984.
Aberdeen Centre enabled the consumers to experience the Orient without the expense of an overseas flight. The mall was also named after a Hong Kong's famous tourist harbour - Aberdeen. It was the largest enclosed Asian retail centre in North America at that time, and other developers follow the concept and modeling. Then, the area around the neighbourhood of Aberdeen Centre has developed into the "Aberdeen District".

I've been here a few times only (as I don't live in Richmond, so its quite the drive out), but I have to say, it's quite the experience.
Not being asian and all.. and should know this by now, but walking into Richmond or into Aberdeen specifically, it was amazing how many asians there can be all in one mall. My girlfriend is chinese, so I respect the culture and completely accept it. Only thing is, I really stood out in the crowd.
Anyways, overall, I find the mall rather interesting. It's not your typical Metrotown, so no large brand stores and basically not a single store or brand that you will recognize besides possibly Rogers and Fido?
But I have to say, if you like Asian Cuisine, you'll love their food court. Cheap prices, awesome food. What more can you ask for eh?
Nothing beats a chinese mall with an amazing food court. I go here almost everyweek to do my grocery shopping as it has all the ingredients one would need to prep for a chinese feast. From fresh meats, to seafood, to chinese bakery to asian party snacks at Candyland.
Free parking - but warning, certain floors the maximum parking limit is 3 hours and I recall the top floor (P4) has a 4 hours limit.
They host lots of events here as the Fairchild radio and TV stations is located within Aberdeen Center.
Oh and I love the store "cube inc" within this small. Pretty neat idea to have literally 'cubed' spaces for people to rent out and sell their goods. As a customer, you also get to see a wide variety of goods available for sale - some hand made, others obviously bought from HK or something.
Anyways, awesome mall to have in GVA and wish there were more like this so I can feel like I'm back in Hong Kong.
